Mold question answered from ChelatingKids2: (21/19/5)

Dear B:

The odds are very high that the algae is in fact MOLD or at minimum is accompanied by mold. I am not sure who tried to tell you it is algae (attached to structures, rocks or other submerged surfaces) & that it is not a problem, but I suspect they are mistaken. MOLD could be a HUGE contributing factor to your child's health issues! The up side of this is that when you change this environmental factor...you might see real improvement in your child!

But first a note about using BLEACH (& Ozone) to kill mold. Some molds are toxic when airborne, but most are not. Many but not all molds will release MYCOTOXINS when you kill them. These mycotoxins are unbeleivably toxic! Bleach will kill mold that can result in this release of mycotoxins. What it does not kill are the spores that will simply grow the mold back. When you treat an air conditioner with bleach & smell it, the odds are very high that you are breathing in newly formed MYCOTOXINS as well as the very toxic bleach. I don't want to scare you as much as put you on a different path. ALWAYS PROTECT YOURSELF WHEN ATTEMTING TO CLEAN UP MOLD WITH MASK & VENTILATION. MOLD EXPOSURE IS NEVER AS ACCUTE & TOXIC AS WHEN YOU ARE ATTEMTING TO KILL & CLEAN IT!!! You are both making it airborne by disturbing it, and potentially releasing mycotoxins by threatening/killing the mold.

If I were in your shoes, my immediate goal would be to either change homes or get the air conditioner removed, replaced & the indoor air quality in your home back to healthy. For now, if it is not needed don't use it & seal it, open your windows as much as possible & get a fan that can suck air out of that room out a window. If you are not in a position to replace the unit your goal needs to be to have your landlord do it (they should anyway, but are usually not motivated). You must request in writing that it be done due to health concerns with your family. Bottom Line: fear of it costing more to ignore you than to comply will be what will motivate them. (Know that this is all based on you already trying to get them to act reasonable through normal communication tenant to landlord)

This fear of it costing more to ignore you will only come from you threatening a lawsuit that seems plausible to them. We just finished a 4 year battle over our son's autism being the result of mold exposure & won. Our contingency lawyer...who let's just be clear most likely WILL NOT TAKE YOUR CASE!!!..& I only point that out because I don't want you to waste time there...Brian Witzer just won the largest case in the US for Mold Exposure causing brain injuries (autism). This has created a new appreciation for the threat of this type of lawsuit.

After two overly polite requests/demands to either a.) be moved to a similar unit you can confirm doesn’t have the same problem which could be determined with a simple test & by the way is the MOST DESIRABLE CHOICE!!! Or b.) have your air conditioner unit replaced & your home cleaned, write a letter suggesting that you have/are contacting (feel free to do so knowing that they are NOT currently taking new cases) Brian Witzer of Witzer & Associates who you hope will consider taking your case. Print pages from his website & regarding the case he just won, that was just settled and include anything else that will motivate them . This should create incentive for them to replace your unit.

As soon as possible do a petrie dish test. This will establish if in fact you have a mold problem. You should put in a good Hepa Filter, but this might not be enough to clear the air. After a week of attempting to clean the air (open windows, fan blowing out, filter on & cleaned as needed) repeat the petrie dish test (make sure you leave it in the most highly contaminated room with it sealed in the room for 24 hours, put on lid before moving it). If the air is clean then you have succeeded to some degree. (Based on my knowledge I don’t trust that mold contaminated areas can be made livable without EXTENSIVE remediation…all mold needs to grow is spores, food & water…you can’t kill spores, but remove or clean things contaminated with them. You can only clean non-porous surfaces &/or launder clothes)

If you are mold exposed & you need a doctor go to Dr Gunnar Heuser or Dr Marinkovich in San Francisco area (Redwood). The one thing for mold that we did that seemed effective, other than moving out of our house, was the Nizorol nasal spray we got from Marinkovich. Dr Johanning in New York state treats mold survivors too!
